Sir Edmund Hillary Biography

Sir Edmund Hillary was born in the year 1919 in the Auckland hospital July 20th.
Sir Edmund Hillary's parents names were Percy and Gertrude Hillary.

Eddie (sir Edmund Hillary) had two siblings ,an older sister called June and an younger brother called Rex.His mother was a school teacher and his father was a Journalist then a Beekeeper.

Edmund's dad owned a small block which held a few cows and a massive  veggie garden.
They always had food even when times were tough in The Great Depression of the 1930s.

Edmund Hillary  went to the primary school in  Tuaakau. Then he went to Auckland Grammar.
Every trip to and from school was a long train journey.

Edmund's first mountain experience was when he  at Auckland Grammar. ,when he went on a class trip to Mt Ruapehu. Sir  Edmund Hillary has loved them ever  since.

After leaving school Edmund went to University  for two years years ,but he decided he preferred to be a beekeeper ,even after all those bee stings he got.

In 1939 Edmund went on a mountaineering trip to the Southern Alps,where he climbed his first mountain Mt Oliver in the Sealy Range.

In 1943 he joined the air force which meant he had less time to climb but  he still managed to climb Mt Tapuaenuku and Mt Egmout .

Sir Edmund climbed many more mountains like Mt Cook NZs highest mountain at 3,764 meters .Over the years he picked up many skills .

In 1949 Edmund Hillary went to Europe to climb but thought it wasn't challenging enough. His big opportunity came in 1951 when his friend George invited him to join the New Zealand expedition to the  Himalayan mountain range some of the biggest mountains in the world.

Later that year Edmund was invited to try a track up Mount Everest the worlds highest mountain reaching to 8,848 meters.

On may 26 2 climbers tried to reach the top but never made it they had to travel back.

At ll:45 he found himself standing on the top of the world.They spent 15 minuets taking photos and enjoying himself.Sir Edmund Hillary left a crucifix on the top of Mount Everest by 2pm they were at there last camp.

 As they walk back through the village of Nepal they were cheered on and they arrived in Delhi they were given gold medals by the Indian Prime Minister Mr Nehru.

Later that year he received a night hood held at Buckingham palace.

When he got back to Auckland he settled down at got married to his first lady Louise he also went back to bee keeping. They had a son called Peter who (BTW) also climbed Mount Everest in 1990.

Edmund went to Antracia on tractors. It was hard and dangerous. There were 4 other men with him.On 4th of July they were first to reach Antarctica with wheels.

After he returned home he settled down to family life again, they had another baby her name was Belinda.

In 1959 he went to New York to receive explorer of the year.

 He went to the Himalayas to builds a school.This term into his new interesting in life he came back to build schools, bridges, hospitals, clinics, and even an air field.

In 1985 he was appointed as New Zealand's highest commiserate India where he represented his country for 4 years. In 1990 Edmund married again.
